A tragic incident unfolded as a shipwreck claimed the lives of forty-one migrants near Italy’s Lampedusa island. Survivors’ accounts, as reported by ANSA news agency on Wednesday, revealed that four individuals who managed to endure the ordeal recounted their harrowing experience.
According to these survivors, the ill-fated voyage commenced from Sfax in Tunisia and tragically ended in the sinking of the vessel while en route to the shores of Italy.
The four survivors told the Coast Guard officers that they had departed from Sfax with a group of 45 people, including 3 children, at 10 AM on Thursday. After approximately 6 hours of sailing, the 7-meter metal boat capsized due to a large wave.
All migrants ended up in the water, as reported by the survivors. Only 15 of them had life jackets, but they still drowned. According to the accounts of the three men and the woman who are in shock, there are 41 confirmed deaths, including 3 children. Neither the Maltese-flagged vessel “Rimona,” which rescued them, nor the Coast Guard patrol boats spotted any bodies. This is because the four survivors were rescued yesterday, several days after the shipwreck, and at a distance from where the tragedy occurred.
