Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to visit Washington on July 27 for discussions with U.S. President Joe Biden, according to an announcement made by the White House. The meeting between the two leaders will cover various important topics, including the ongoing Ukraine war and transatlantic cooperation concerning China. The White House spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, stated that they will also address developments in North Africa and Italy’s upcoming presidency of the G7 in 2024.
This visit marks Meloni’s first official trip to the United States since assuming office last year. Following the NATO summit in Vilnius, Meloni confirmed the meeting during a press conference.
Meloni, the first female prime minister of Italy, took office in October as the leader of a right-wing coalition. Italian diplomats have revealed that Meloni intends to meet with Biden before making a decision regarding Italy’s participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). In 2019, Italy became the first and only G7 nation to join the ambitious BRI program, which has faced criticism for potentially granting China control over sensitive technologies and vital infrastructure.
As Italy assumes the G7 presidency next year, Meloni emphasized that the reconstruction of Ukraine will be a key focus. She expressed her belief that contributing to Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts is a way to promote peace, freedom, and Euro-Atlantic prosperity for the nation. Additionally, Meloni highlighted Africa’s support as another crucial topic for discussion during her talks with President Biden, as it is a key aspect of Italy’s G7 presidency.
Italy argues that increased assistance is necessary for countries like Tunisia to prevent migrants from embarking on perilous journeys across the Mediterranean to Europe. Meloni stressed that Africa is not a poor continent, but rather a continent that has suffered from exploitation.
