Lenny the lobster is a 111-year-old lobster that was released into the Atlantic Ocean on Long Island. Lenny was caught off the coast of Maine and was transported to Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park, New York, where he became a local celebrity. He was then released back into the ocean as part of a special send-off ceremony.
Lobsters are known for their longevity and can live up to 100 years or more. Lenny’s age is quite remarkable and he has lived through many historical events such as World War I, World War II, and the Great Depression.

The twenty three and a half pound Lenny the Lobster is an attraction. “He’s like a mainstay. People come from all over to see him, they pet him, they look at him, kids love him,” says the owner of the restaurant. “We’re going to set him free, send him back to the ocean to his family so he can live another hundred years. He can enjoy the clean waterways of the South Shore,” he added.
One woman taking part in the Lenny’s freedom party summarized it best: “Lenny is a movie star!”
And they all hope he doesn’t get caught again.
