Nine people, including some children, were injured Memorial Day evening when gunfire erupted along a boardwalk in Hollywood, Florida, authorities said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that an altercation between two groups “resulted in gunfire.” Police have so far detained one person of interest.
Local law enforcement responded to reports of shots fired at 6:42 PM. According to Hollywood Police Department spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi, they found nine victims with gunshot wounds. The nine victims were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
The nine victims included six adults and three children, according to Memorial Healthcare System spokesperson Yanet Obarrio Sanchez. She added that all of the victims were in stable condition. Bettineschi said that the four children ranged in age from 1 to 17, while the five adults were between 25 to 65.
Videos posted on Twitter on Monday night showed people fleeing the scene and emergency medical crews responding and providing aid to multiple injured people.
Mayor Josh Levy of Hollywood said at a news conference that the “altercation” between the two groups was “just completely unacceptable.”
“People come to enjoy a holiday weekend on the beach with their families,” Mr. Levy said. “To have people in complete, reckless disregard of the safety of the public, and to have an altercation with guns in a public setting with thousands of people around them, is beyond reckless.”
