According to three sources familiar with the plans, NBC News reports that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is set to make an announcement declaring his presidential candidacy. The announcement will take place during a discussion on Twitter Spaces, the audio chat platform, with Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter. The event is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. and will be moderated by David Sacks, a tech entrepreneur and a trusted ally of Musk who also supports DeSantis.
Simultaneously, the campaign will release a launch video on the same evening, and following Memorial Day, DeSantis will embark on visits to several early primary states. This collaboration with Musk could prove highly beneficial for DeSantis, as it would introduce him to Musk’s vast following, including his 140 million Twitter followers, thereby enhancing his credibility. However, DeSantis must also be cautious as the association could become burdensome if he becomes entangled in the controversies surrounding Musk’s contentious statements.
The presidential launch will effectively link the influential billionaire tech mogul with one of the emerging stars of the Republican Party. Musk has expressed admiration for DeSantis, who is known for his consistent criticism of the corporate media. Last year, Musk stated his support for the governor in the event he decides to run for president.
The announcement coincides with a retreat in Miami for high-end fundraisers committed to supporting DeSantis. The retreat, which will take place from May 24 to 26 at the Four Seasons hotel, will provide bundlers with briefings from the campaign staff and opportunities to reach out and secure financial contributions for the campaign.
