A flight headed to Florida was forced to make a landing in Jacksonville when a fire started.
A Spirit Airlines flight had departed from Dallas and was traveling to Orlando.
According to Spirit Airlines, a fire in an overhead bin was extinguished on the flight, and it seems it was a battery fire. Passenger Rocco Chierichella jumped in to help.
“I’m a retired New York City fireman and I guess it’s just instinct. I got to the… it was a baggage overhead and smoke was billowing out of it,” he said. “The whole cabin smoked up, you know filled up with smoke, and I ripped open the door. One of the attendants came by and yelled ‘get some water.'”
Firefighters believe the flames stemmed from a battery fire in someone’s carry-on.
“You’ve got to realize that the airlines have reasons, rules on batteries and so forth and there’s reasons for that. Some of these things are very volatile and can cause a fire,” Capt. Eric Prosswimmer said.
One person was taken to the hospital.
