On Saturday morning, a Norfolk Southern freight train experienced a derailment in Lexington, North Carolina.
A spokesperson for the company reassured the public that there is no cause for concern in the area. The spokesperson confirmed that out of the 132 cars on the train, only one set of wheels had derailed. The incident did not result in any hazardous materials or endangerment to the public. The crew remained unharmed, and additional personnel were dispatched for the cleanup process.
The company thanked the public for their patience and requested their cooperation near the affected area. After the initial report, the spokesperson clarified that only one set of wheels had derailed. The incident caused multiple Amtrak trains to be temporarily halted.
Just weeks after a Norfolk Southern train carrying 50 rail cars, including 10 with vinyl chloride, derailed in East Palestine, Ohio on February 3rd, Saturday’s derailment occurred. The earlier accident resulted in dangerous chemicals being released onto the ground and a plume of smoke rising into the sky.
