A 5-year-old child was killed in a crash in East Tampa on Thursday.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of a 2007 Nissan Titan was making a right turn on North 56th Street around 3:30 p.m. when an unrestrained five-year-old sitting in the backseat opened the door and fell onto the road.
The father of the child, who was in the passenger seat, alerted the driver. The driver immediately stopped the truck, which was atop the child’s legs, according to troopers.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver then drove the truck off the child and the father put the child back into the truck.
When the driver and father attempted to drive to a local hospital, they came upon a Tampa police officer on North 50th Street and East 23rd Avenue. Troopers said the driver and father flagged the officer down and asked for help.
The 5-year-old child was taken to a hospital and later died.
