Italian police on Tuesday arrested a doctor accused of treating Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro during his 30-year run from justice that ended with his arrest in a Palermo cancer clinic on January 16.
The Carabinieri of the ROS special unit arrested Alfonso Tumbarello, the Campobello di Mazara doctor accused of having treated Messina Denaro for years while he was Italy’s most wanted fugitive.
Tumbarello has been charged with external complicity in mafia association and making false statements.
Also in handcuffs is Andrea Bonafede, cousin and namesake of the surveyor who lent his identity to Messina Denaro and bought on his behalf the house where the boss spent his last months.
Prosecutors have charged him with aiding and abetting and failure to comply with a sentence aggravated by favoring Cosa Nostra.
