“The right has culture, a great culture: the founder of right-wing thinking in our country was Dante Alighieri, for his vision of humanity, of interpersonal relations and also for his deeply right-wing political construction.”
This is what the Minister of Culture himself, Gennaro Sangiuliano, speaking at an event organized by Fratelli d’Italia in Milan ahead of the regional elections in Lombardy, calls “a strong statement.”
“Being the Minister of Culture – confesses Sangiuliano – is a bit of a dream of my life, also to measure myself and try to change that current with respect to which I have always rowed against the tide both in my professional activity as a journalist and as an essayist and student of history. The Right has culture, it just has to affirm it.”
But, Sangiuliano warns again, “we must not replace the Gramscian cultural hegemony of the left with a hegemony of the right: we must liberate culture, because culture is such if it is free and dialectically open. I – assures the Culture Minister – do not want to replace left-wing hegemony with right-wing hegemony, but I want to assert Italian hegemony.”
