The Antica Pizzeria Brandi in Naples, one of the most renowned historical places in the city where, according to tradition, pizza Margherita was invented in 1889, in homage to the Queen Margherita of Savoy, was shut down on Thursday due to violations of the health code.
During an inspection in August, the carabinieri of the Antisophistications Unit had found sanitary deficiencies and imposed some conditions to correct the violations, but apparently today the place has been found in default.
On social media, with a multilingual post also translated into Arabic and Chinese, the Brandi pizzeria announced that it will be closed today and tomorrow “for extraordinary maintenance”.
In 2017 the Antica Pizzeria Brandi celebrated the inscription of the “Art of Neapolitan Pizza Makers” in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity with a pizza in Piazza del Plebiscito.
The Antica Pizzeria Brandi is located uphill Sant’Anna diPalazzo, in Chiaia, an upscale neighborhood. Inside, you can see a plaque commemorating the 100 years since the creation of the first Margherita pizza in the room in 1989.
Listed in tourist guides from around the world, the place also boasts the title of “oldest pizzeria in the world”, opened in 1760.
