Two siters age 15 and 17 were fatally struck by a train while they were crossing the rails at Riccione station, in the northern region of Emilia-Romagna. The incident took place on Sunday morning at about 7 a.m.
The two young women were initially reported as having been spotted entering the station and stumbling as they attempted to cross the rails. Police are investigating the accident and the likely causes, including the possibility of reckless crossing, an altercation between the two that ended on the tracks, or an attempted suicide by one of them that resulted in both of them being run over by the speeding train while the other sought to stop her.
Following the event, members of the Railway Police and Giulia Bradanini, the on-duty public prosecutor from the Rimini Public Prosecutor’s Office, as well as Carabinieri and firefighters rushed to the area.
