Some 4 Italians in 10 will cut their consumption due to the Ukraine war, a report by Legacoop and the polling agency Ipsos said Tuesday.
A whopping 95% of Italians is convinced that the conflict will bring repercussions for the Italian economy, the “FragilItalia” report said. With respect to February, however, a higher percentage, 48% compared to 42%, think the knock-on effects may be contained. Some 47% see major impacts. This concern is higher, 52%, among working class households. Some 38% of Italians, up six points on February, think they will lose some of their purchasing power due to the war.
Some 68% are suffering general anxiety from the rise in the cost of living, up two points since February. Fears that gas supplies may be cut have fallen 17 points to 39% compared to February. “In a country already affected by a huge wage issue,” said Legacoop President Mauro Lusetti, “the flare-up in the cost of living erodes savings, widens inequalities and sows anxiety. We must safeguard Italians’ purchasing power. Urgent measures are needed to tackle the price emergency”.
