A significant number of drones spotted over New Jersey in late 2024 were authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), former President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday.
During her inaugural press briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared a statement on behalf of Trump, addressing the widespread concern caused by the drone activity.
“Following extensive research and review, it has been determined that many of the drones observed in large numbers over New Jersey were authorized by the FAA for research purposes and other activities,” Leavitt announced. “A substantial portion of these drones were operated by hobbyists, recreational users, and private individuals who enjoy drone flying. Curiosity also played a role in escalating the sightings. These were not hostile actors.”
Reports of drones, some described as large as an SUV, proliferated along the East Coast throughout November and December, with New Jersey emerging as a hotspot. The sightings raised alarms among residents and local authorities, prompting federal agencies to step in.
At the time, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a joint statement acknowledging the reports. “Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that the drone sightings pose a threat to national security or public safety, nor do they appear to have any foreign connections,” the agencies originally stated.
The nature of the research conducted with these drones remains unclear. Leavitt did not provide further details on the “various other reasons” cited in her remarks.
