A 75-year-old woman was suddenly assaulted at the 125th Street subway station in East Harlem early Tuesday, according to police and sources. The woman, standing on the platform for the Nos. 4, 5, and 6 trains, noticed a man behaving erratically just moments before he punched her in the back without warning. The force of the blow sent her sprawling to the ground, where she sustained injuries to her face, according to authorities.
The assailant fled the scene immediately, and the woman was later taken to Mount Sinai Morningside for treatment of her injuries, which included a cut on her lip. By Tuesday evening, no arrests had been made.
The incident adds to a recent string of seemingly random subway attacks. A day prior, a woman was punched after exiting a train at West 96th Street, and over the weekend, a man was slashed on the arm by an erratic individual at the Second Avenue station.
Overall felony assaults in the subway system have seen a slight decline, with a 5% decrease from last year’s figures, based on police data. Meanwhile, misdemeanor assaults have remained relatively steady, with only a minor decrease compared to the same period in 2023.
