A 15-year-old girl was wounded in the buttocks during a shooting that erupted Monday evening in a Bronx neighborhood, police reported.
The incident took place around 6:45 p.m. near the intersection of 183rd Street and Crotona Avenue in the Belmont section of the borough, just a short distance from the Bronx Zoo. The girl was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Authorities believe the teenager was not the intended target. A relative of the victim informed The New York Post that the girl had been standing with a group of other teens when the gunfire broke out.
One local resident, who spoke to the paper, recalled being jolted awake by the sound of shots. Fearful of being struck by a stray bullet, she described the noise as “loud, like usual gunfire,” adding, “It’s just not safe.”
Police cordoned off a section of the sidewalk, which was partially covered by scaffolding, as more than a dozen officers and investigators combed through the scene.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
