The Federal Aviation Administration reports that a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza A36 crashed near the end of the runway at Long Island’s Macarthur Airport at 6:14 p.m. on Monday, leaving two men dead, officials said.
According to Suffolk County Police, the pilot attempted to take off heading south from runway 6 but crashed while attempting to return to the same runway; the male pilot and his adult male passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. It is not known at this time where the men were headed or why the pilot was attempting to return to the runway.
The crash was witnessed by an airport employee. No other injuries were reported, police said.
The bodies were moved to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner for positive identification; the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are responding, police said.
The names of the men are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate; the NTSB will be in charge of the investigation, the FAA said.
