Two men were killed and a third was critically injured after gunshots rang out just minutes apart at a migrant shelter in Brooklyn on Sunday night, according to police and sources.
A man in his 30s was shot in the chest and arm at approximately 10:44 p.m. in a park near Flushing Avenue and Steuben Street outside the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the NYPD reported. The victim was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The NYPD also reported that, around seven minutes later, two men were shot outside the migrant shelter at 29 Ryerson Street, approximately a quarter of a mile from the initial gunshot.
A 47-year-old man was shot in the head and subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital, while another victim, thought to be in his 30s, was in serious condition after being hit numerous times.
The Ryerson Street shelter was opened in April, with the capacity to host up to 765 single adult migrants. According to law enforcement, the shootings appear to be related, and all of the victims are migrants.
According to reports, detectives are looking into whether members of the Venezuelan group El Tren de Aragua, who ride mopeds, were involved in the shootings. No arrests have been made as of Monday morning.
