Oyster Bay, on the North Shore of Long Island, has once again sailed into the spotlight, clinching the title of Best Regional Harbor in America for the Mid-Atlantic region. This prestigious accolade, bestowed by the US Harbors organization, is a testament to the community’s unwavering commitment to preserving the natural beauty and vitality of its waters.
“US Harbors asked the public to vote for their favorite harbor out of more than 1500 harbors, exemplifying where they had the most passion for where they live, boat and fish,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “We are proud to continue many efforts to keep the vitality of our beautiful harbor, including a highly successful shellfish management program with a soon-to-be expanded hatchery that produces millions of clam and oyster seedlings annually. Working with environmental partners on a variety of initiatives to protect our harbor, we will continue these initiatives to help naturally clean our waterways, protect our shoreline and filter local waters while repopulating shellfish.”
The town’s proactive environmental initiatives have been pivotal in enhancing the harbor’s ecological resilience. The community’s passion for their harbor is reflected in the overwhelming support during the voting process, where Oyster Bay outshined over 1,500 harbors nationwide. The recognition from US Harbors underscores the harbor’s exceptional quality, its rich maritime heritage, and its role as a cherished haven for boaters, anglers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
The village of Oyster Bay, located right on the bay, is a place brimming with history and natural beauty. It’s the town that once served as the summer White House for President Theodore Roosevelt, and his home, Sagamore Hill, is now a fascinating museum surrounded by lush grounds. Nature enthusiasts can revel in the Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary for diverse wildlife and a perfect spot for kayaking or bird-watching.

The town also hosts the delightful Oyster Festival–a beloved tradition– which hosts a spectacular array of activities and, of course, oysters served in every conceivable way. This waterfront festival is the largest on the East Coast, drawing over 200,000 visitors who come to enjoy the oyster eating and shucking contests, arts and crafts, amusement rides, and live entertainment set against the beautiful backdrop of Oyster Bay.
