The owner of a longstanding Brooklyn institution know for its cheesecake may be taking his chances at becoming the city’s next mayor. Alan Rosen, age 55, is the third-generation owner of Junior’s Restaurant and Bakery and he recently announced he is debating a mayoral run in the upcoming 2025 election this week.
Rosen says that while he has “no issues with Eric Adams,” he thinks the current mayor and former Brooklyn Borough President has mishandled certain issues in the city, such as the influx of migrants and the epidemic of homelessness.
Junior’s is a well known Brooklyn diner which was first opened by Rosen’s grandfather, Harry Rosen, nearly 75 years ago in 1950, and specializes in its famous cheesecake along with its deli-style sandwiches. The historic spot, located on Flatbush Ave with an honorary street sign dubbed “Harry Rosen Way: Cheesecake Corner,” has been popular among political leaders, holding an annual breakfast anticipating Election Day, which is usually attended by city officials.
“My business experience and philosophy on my business would make me the hospitality mayor, the mayor for all New Yorkers,” Rosen told 1010 WINS in an interview.
Before confirming his candidacy however, Rosen is first vetting New Yorkers for support, identifying as a “moderate Republican” who is passionate about public safety and the quality of life in the city. He said his campaign would back increased police funding and other measures he maintains would help residents feel more secure. “I’m not a Democrat. I don’t believe in that far-left stuff. I’m fiscally conservative and socially liberal,” Rosen told the Post.
If he chooses to run, Rosen would face Mayor Adams as his primary opponent next November in the 2025 election.
