A 31-year-old man was fatally shot in SoHo by a gang who jumped him during a robbery attempt early Tuesday, according to police and sources.
About 5:15 a.m., the victim was attacked on Greene Street close to Grand Street, the attack perhaps coming after a night out in Queens, according to sources. The victim has been identified by the police as Javier Osorio-Mejia of Bayonne, New Jersey, a well-known and reputable high-end sneaker reseller going by the name Upscale Cracc.
As the suspects left the scene in a black sedan shortly after the attack, Osorio-Mejia was discovered on the street and sent to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was later pronounced dead.
A NYPD homicide investigation is underway, and as of Tuesday morning no suspect has been held in custody.
In the 1st Precinct, which covers populated areas of Wall Street, Tribeca, and SoHo in Lower Manhattan, shootings and killings are relatively uncommon. According to NYPD records, there were no gunshot incidents or homicides in the precinct between January and mid-June of last year. However, two gunshots and two killings have been recorded in the precinct in the same time frame this year.
