An Ecuadorian immigrant has been detained by the NYPD following a broad daylight sexual assault in which a suspect with a machete approached two 13-year-olds, a boy and a girl, bound them by the wrists, and sexually assaulted the latter in a popular Queens park.
Five days after the horrific attack in Kissena Park on Thursday afternoon, the migrant, who sources suspect entered the country in 2021, was taken into police custody early on Tuesday.
The NYPD had released pictures and video of the young man they were searching for on Monday night, promising a $10,000 reward for any information that resulted in an arrest.
According to accounts, police located him after neighbors held him down, reported 911, and identified him from the wanted poster.
Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, commented, “It was good police work.” “They got the drawings out of the suspect and his tattoo, and then were able to secure the surveillance photo and … some help from the public – but that’s how it’s supposed to work.”
