If you’ve always wanted to visit Rome and experience the Italian capitol, the Italian Cultural Institute offers a way to do it without leaving New York. On the occasion of Italian National Sports Day 2024, on June 4, at 6pm, director Fabio Finotti will launch the exhibition Architecture for Communities. Sport and Faith. The event will focus on the Eternal City and the significant role sports and religious infrastructures play in shaping the contemporary urban landscape, enhancing its cultural and architectural heritage, and fostering community relationships.
Based on a project by Italian diplomat Umberto Vattani and made in collaboration with Italian author Margarita Segarra Lagunes and Italian architects Rosalia Vittorini and Alessandro Melis, the exhibition is organized in two parts: “Contemporary District of Rome. A Hundred Years of Architecture and Engineering” and “Suburban Churches and Religious Architecture.”
The first is an overview of the architectural heritage developed over a century along the bend of the Tiber River, upstream from Rome. This heritage constitutes a cultural itinerary—complementing the more well-known ones—capable of presenting the image of a continuously transforming city. It includes sports and cultural infrastructures and outdoor activity facilities.
The second analyzes the churches and religious buildings constructed in Rome’s suburban neighborhoods, highlighting the dialogue between faith, architecture, and community. Examples of outdoor activities and sports showcase how these elements are intertwined in the suburban context.
The exhibition will open on June 4th and run through June 16th, those that wish to attend are able to RSVP here.
