It is a must-see moment for tourists and photography lovers visiting New York City. A unique spectacle known as “Manhattanhenge” is coming to the Big Apple in the next few hours.
The definition, first used by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, alludes to the moment the Sun sets in perfect alignment with Manhattan’s street grid, creating a spectacle of color and symmetry with the metropolitan skyscrapers.
New Yorkers and tourists will be able to enjoy the first “Manhattanhenge” day of 2024 as early as Tuesday, May 28 – with half of the Sun’s disk aligned with the grid. Instead, the first full Sun moment this year will occur on Wednesday, May 29.
Manhattanhenge occurs annually, typically for four evenings before and after the summer solstice. The etymology comes from the Stonehenge monoliths, which were arranged so that the Sun would rise in perfect alignment with many of the stones on the day of the summer solstice.
