New York City Mayor Eric Adams will fly to Rome this week for a conference that will also feature a meeting with Pope Francis, according to the mayor’s office.
Adams is scheduled to depart for Rome on Thursday, stay briefly in Vatican City, and then return to New York City on Monday, City Hall confirmed.
The reason for Adams’ mission is the May 10-11 World Meeting on Human Fraternity, a conference about exchanging ideas for a world at peace where Adams will be meeting with “leaders and stakeholders”, his office said.
Fundazione Fratelli Tutti, a foundation founded by Pope Francis, is reportedly funding the mayor’s getaway.
According to a press statement from the organizers, the two-day event in the Eternal City will include roundtable conversations with Pope Francis, other mayors, and a group of experts in sports, the arts, and science, including thirty Nobel Peace Prize recipients. The president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, is also scheduled to attend some of the events.
“Pope Francis will also take part in the initiative, in a tender meeting reserved for children, proposing a reflection on the theme of fraternity, which is particularly dear to him,” a description of the event reads.
Adams will be accompanied on the trip by his former chief of staff and longstanding political consultant, Frank Carone, who had received his own invitation.
During his term, Adams has already taken foreign trips to Greece, Israel, Latin America, and Qatar.
