Around thirty residents were forced to flee their homes as a massive fire that broke out in a Brooklyn supermarket on Wednesday evening quickly spread to four nearby apartment buildings, injuring seven people.
The flames erupted shortly before 6 p.m. inside Christa’s Kitchen & Market on Bushwick Avenue in Bushwick and expanded to at least a five-alarm fire with over 250 smoke-eaters arriving, FDNY authorities stated at the site.
The seven injured included a person receiving treatment on the spot for smoke inhalation and six firemen, five of whom were sent to nearby hospitals with minor injuries.
“This fire impacted this community, not only the supermarket that they use but the residents of this community in four different buildings,” FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeifer told reporters during a briefing. “And our hearts go out to those residents.”
“A very significant amount of fire” started in the grocery shop, according to the FDNY, and quickly spread to at least two buildings on Cooper Street behind it as well as two adjacent buildings to the left. Smoke clouded the sky and could be seen for a mile.
An investigation into the fire’s still unknown cause will be carried out by fire marshals.
