A suspect who was shot by NYPD and federal agents on Tuesday afternoon in Manhattan has died, authorities said. The FDNY reports that the shooting happened just after 2:30 p.m. on West 24th Street between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue in Chelsea.
Officers were on West 24th Street looking for a 25-year-old male who was sought for a felony assault that had happened earlier this month, according to Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. After the suspect ran into an optical shop, police attempted to arrest him before a violent altercation started, according to Kenny. The guy allegedly pulled out a gun against the officers, which prompted the latters to open fire and kill him.
After administering first assistance, including CPR, the anti-gang task force members later waited for the emergency service to carry the suspect to Bellevue Hospital, where he was later declared dead. Kenny said that the man had been shot three times in various spots across his body, citing the results of the preliminary investigation.
A task force member who was gashed in the head during the altercation was also hospitalized and subsequently discharged from a nearby hospital.
