With 49% of registered voters in New York expressing a negative opinion of her, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s favorability rating reached its lowest point ever. Her favorability decreased somewhat from 46% to 41% in a February Siena study, while her unfavorable score increased substantially.
According to the poll, released on Monday and based on responses from 806 New York state voters reached between April 15 and 17, Hochul has the lowest job approval rating of any Siena College poll. 49% of New Yorkers disapprove of the work she is doing, while 45% think she is doing a good job. This is a steep decrease from February, when 48% of voters approved of her work performance compared to 47% who disapproved.
The proposal to impose a $15 toll on vehicles entering Manhattan’s core business area, known as congestion pricing, did not perform well in the survey either. The survey indicates that 25% of respondents support the idea, while 63% are against it.
According to Siena, 82% of New Yorkers believe that the city’s recent surge of roughly 190,000 migrants is a severe concern, with the majority of them disapproving of how President Biden, Mayor Adams, or Hochul handled the problem. 56% of voters also think the state should crack down harder on unauthorized cannabis companies, while 76% of people think stealing is a serious issue.
“Hochul’s favorability and job approval ratings improved from last fall to January of this year, but her ratings since then fell, both in February and this month,” stated Gary Greenberg, a Siena College pollster, as reported by amNew York.
“While Democrats continue to view Hochul favorably and approve of the job she’s doing by about two-to-one, 79% of Republicans view her unfavorably and 81% disapprove of the job she’s doing,” Greenberg said. “And by two-to-one margins, independents view her unfavorably and disapprove of the job she’s doing as governor.”
