Three men were shot, two of them fatally, in two separate Bronx shootings that occurred less than an hour apart early Monday, authorities said.
A 26-year-old man was shot in the torso shortly after 3 in the morning, according to NYPD authorities, in the third-floor corridor of a building at the Longfellow Avenue Rehab NYCHA complex in Longwood. The individual was taken by first responders to Lincoln Hospital, where he was later declared dead.
Two miles away and an hour later, two men were shot outside a McDonald’s in the Melrose section, according to NYPD officials. Police stated there isn’t any immediate evidence linking the two shootings, and no one has been arrested in either incident.
According to department records, the 26-year-old was the first person shot and killed in the 41st precinct—which includes Longwood and Hunts Point—so far this year.
There had only been one previous fatal shooting in 2024 in the 40th precinct, which covers the South Bronx communities of Port Morris, Mott Haven, and Melrose. According to NYPD statistics, Brooklyn has seen the highest number of fatal shootings this year (19 instances reported), compared to 11 in the Bronx. There were almost 60 deadly gunshots in each of the two boroughs in 2023.
