The Yankees Home Opener is just around the corner and fans are gearing up to cheer for their favorite team on Friday, April 5, when the beloved “Bronx Bombers” will play against the Toronto Blue Jays. For this occasion, the New York Transit Museum is reviving its Nostalgia Rides with its century-old trains.
At 11 a.m. sharp at Grand Central Station, a 1917 IRT Lo-V train car–known as the “Train of Many Colors”–will depart for Yankee Stadium. The trains will run non-stop to carry as many baseball fans as possible throughout the day from the uptown 4 train platform at 42 Street, on the Lexington Avenue Line, to 161st Street in the Bronx. The ride will take about 25 minutes. The match starts at 1:05 p.m. The ticket is the price of a subway single fare, $2.90.
First inaugurated in the 1920s, New Yorkers used to ride the Lo-V trains, operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit, to enjoy their time at Yankee Stadium. And they were not retired until the 1960s. Now they can be seen only at the New York Transit Museum. This once-in-a-lifetime experience will bring fans back to that time: cars still have the same ceiling fans, rattan seats, and drop car sash windows–improved and secured.
