Last Thursday when a female student walking to class stumbled upon a severed left arm of a male that was dumped along the eastern perimeter of Southards Pond Park in Babylon, Long island, the police launched an investigation to discover the identity of the victim and the perpetrator.
Today Newsday and several TV news outlets have reported that multiple people have been arrested after search warrants were executed Monday in relation to the investigation.
More information is expected to be released later today, according to Newsday.
The remains of the female victim were not the only ones found. Responding Suffolk police, using cadaver dogs, searched the park and also located another male arm and leg. The right arm was discovered about 20 feet from the left arm on the eastern perimeter.
In the latest development, on Tuesday more human remains were found in a wooded area across from 103 Lakeway Drive in West Babylon as well as at Bethpage State Park on Tuesday; the scenes were processed by New York State Police and the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
The remains located in West Babylon and Bethpage are believed to belong to the same victims from the February 29 discovery, police said.
The female, 59 years old, has been identified and her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said. The male has been tentatively identified and was 53 years old at the time of his death, police said.
Their last known address was the same location in Yonkers, however, it’s unclear when they last resided there, police said.
Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine expressed the belief that the homicide did not happen at the park. “This is was an isolated incident where people chose a park to put the bodies, not where it occurred.”
The village park reopened on Saturday after police finished their investigation.
Investigators said the body parts had been dumped days, or even hours, before they were discovered.
