According to a police report, a small plane landed on the Southern State Parkway late Tuesday morning.
As of this time there are very few details. There was no immediate word on any injuries, although authorities say two people are being evaluated.
It happened at around 11:45 a.m. between exits 34 and 35. Video from the scene shows the plane, a Piper which typically seats four people, suffered some damage to a wing. Earlier, at around 10 AM, the plane had been observed to be flying low over Suffolk County. Speculation is that it overshot the runway at Republic Airport and ended up on the highway. There is considerable damage to the plane.
The road in the area was closed and there are several emergency crews on the scene.
The incident has caused some major traffic disruptions in the area.
