A heated altercation between NYPD officers and migrants at the increasingly rebellious Randall’s Island tent city resulted in one individual being taken into custody.
The unrest began on Thursday, authorities said, when police requested an unidentified person who was not allowed to be at the institution to leave. It’s unknown what prompted the altercation or why officers were there.
In a video of the incident, an individual in a white t-shirt and black jeans is seen fighting with several police officers while a sizable audience watches. Eventually, other bystanders enter the fight and even use a rucksack to stab one female cop in the head.
The suspect was then restrained and handcuffed. After the fight, no one was sent to the hospital, according to the police.
Since it began sheltering migrants in August 2023, the Randall’s Island tent city has had a series of violent incidents. A 24-year-old asylum-seeker was fatally stabbed in the cafeteria tent in January over a fight over a woman.
