The title “BASILICATE” indicates the plurality of forms taken on by Lucanian culture in the countries where the emigrants’ communities reside.
The project was designed and organized with the Lucanian communities of New York, Buenos Aires and Montevideo and includes: an international exhibition that will take place in four different locations- the 3 participating cities plus Turin, Italy- workshops and activities with Lucanians abroad; international conferences, and an in-depth publication.
The event to be held at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York is the second of the series and aims at presenting the project to the Italian American community with a focus on Lucanian cuisine and recipes. In fact, in recent months, a competition was launched in which Lucanians in New York were asked to send a traditional recipe as it is made by them. The winners of the competition will be present at the event and, the following day, they will compete in a cooking workshop at Carlo’s Bakery together with Mauro Castano. The result of this laboratory will become part of the international exhibition BASILICATË.
The mutual influences between the communities of Lucanian emigrants and the cultures of the places of arrival compose an imaginary that is transmitted through the language, rites and daily habits, describing the current state of Lucanian culture in the world and its ways of integration. By studying and showing these processes, BASILICATE talks about emigration as a form of dialogue and continuous exchange that makes up the contemporary image of places.
BASILICATË is organized by the Federation of Lucanian Associations and Clubs in Piedmont thanks to the support of the Basilicata Region, the coordination of the Centro dei Lucani nel Mondo Nino Calice, and the artistic direction of the Architecture of Shame group.
