Valentine’s Day is coming up and you may be wondering what to give your honey to celebrate the most romantic day of the year.
But not everyone wants to give or receive the typical—and maybe boring– flowers, chocolates, or jewelry. Some people prefer to surprise their partners with something more unusual, quirky, or downright weird. Here are some of the weirdest gifts for Valentine’s Day that you might want to consider (or avoid):
A personalized potato: Yes, you read that right. You can order a potato online and have it delivered to your sweetheart with a custom message or photo printed on it. Nothing says “I love you” like a starchy tuber. And if she doesn’t like it as a gift, then maybe she will prefer it baked with all the toppings?
A talking toilet paper holder with a voice recorder: This gadget allows you to record a message that plays every time someone pulls the toilet paper. You can use it to express your affection, crack a joke, or remind your partner to do their chores.
How about underwear with your face on it? This is a gift that only the most confident and devoted couples would appreciate. You can upload a photo of your face and have it printed on a pair of underwear for your lover to wear. It’s a way of being close and intimate with them even when you’re apart.
But this next one, offered by the Bronx Zoo, is definitely not everyone’s idea of romantic. The folks at the world-famous zoo will let the public symbolically name one of its 10,000 Madagascar hissing cockroaches after your valentine.

The Bronx Zoo folks call it “A gift to remember”, saying, “You don’t always have the right words, but you can still give them goosebumps. Name a Roach for your Valentine, because roaches are forever.”
What New Yorker can argue with the idea that roaches are forever? And who knows more about roaches?
For a $15 donation, your loved one will get a certificate announcing that a cockroach has been named in their honor. For a $35 donation, patrons can have a romantic Valentine’s virtual encounter with one of the cockroaches and a surprise animal guest. Hopefully, the “guest” will not be that other perennial New Yorker, the rat.
Cockroach-themed socks and plush dolls are also available for larger donations. The “name a roach” Valentine’s program first started in 2011, with some people naming the roaches after their exes or even in-laws.
Last year, 3,246 people named roaches as part of the Valentine’s Day program, according to the Bronx Zoo.
If you go with this option, make sure your honey has a great sense of humor. In any case, the donation to the Bronx Zoo is a worthy cause.
