What is “The Other America”, the real one? Upon returning from their trip as special correspondents for the Italian Cultural Institute, nine thousand miles on-the-road from New York to Los Angeles and back, the two journalists will talk about what more there is to discover besides the familiar sites in the tourists ‘ imagination, places that are closer to the true heart of this great nation.
Some examples: little-known natural parks such as Cave Creek Canyon, the “island in the mountains” of Arizona; architectural curiosities such as the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso, designed like the temples of Bhutan; unexpected beauties such as the Crystal Bridges Museum nestled in the woods of Bentonville, Arkansas, the capital of the supermarket giant Walmart; evidence of America’s darkest past, such as the new “lynching museum” in Montgomery, Alabama; glimpses of hope like the story of Opal Lee, the 96-year-old African-American “Grandmother of Juneteenth”, who in Fort Worth, Texas, preaches and practices love “blind” to skin color. And countless “pieces” of Italy, such as the village of Little Italy near Little Rock, Arkansas and newly immigrated Italians such as the scientists at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
