Wednesday afternoon, New York state troopers killed an individual in a shootout on the state thruway. The officers pulled his vehicle over after having identified him as a suspect in a shooting investigation, as stated by authorities.
The incident occurred on Interstate 87, in Hillburn near the New Jersey state line just before 3 p.m., when the suspect fired the first shot, after which troopers responded by firing back, killing the person.
According to state police, the two troopers that were involved in the incident decided to pull over the vehicle after discovering it was the subject of a “be on the lookout” alert.
One trooper has been left with minor injuries and the other was not harmed, state police said.
On Wednesday evening, Albany police said that the person killed by the troopers was wanted in connection with a shooting in the capital city earlier in the day- allegedly just two hours prior. Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins said the suspect was shot in the head and was hospitalized in critical condition, later dying from his wounds.
The fatal dispute between the officers and the suspect shut down the southbound lanes of the thruway for several hours, causing a major traffic jam that lasted into Wednesday evening.
Officials have not yet disclosed the name of the person killed by the troopers, nor the trooper’s names. A motive for the Albany shooting has also not been revealed.
