Two subway trains were involved in a low-speed collision on the Upper West Side Thursday afternoon, when one of them rear-ended the other, causing a minor derailment and injuring numerous passengers, according to officials.
About 3 p.m., MTA sources told NBC New York that a subway train had rear-ended a construction train close to the 96th Street Station.
At least 24 people were said to have minor injuries in the derailment and were taken to area hospitals, according to the FDNY. The passenger train that derailed had approximately 300 people on board and they were safely evacuated, according to New York City Transit President Richard Davey.
Although a minor derailment, the accident caused major disruptions to Manhattan’s 1, 2, and 3 lines. Service has been suspended as investigators look into the event, according to the MTA.
