Numerous New Yorkers were impacted by a temporary power outage on Thursday night as smoke was observed billowing over a Brooklyn power plant.
Just before midnight, some X users in New York City reported experiencing flickering lights and internet failures. Social media users posted a video of smoke emerging from a Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn, Con Edison substation, where police claimed to have received a 911 call reporting an explosion.
The NYPD said that “there was a disruption causing a citywide power surge” as Con Ed workers were fixing a transmission line at the Farragut Substation on John Street. No one was hurt.
“Customers may have experienced a dip or surge in power at that time. Crews are investigating and working to make necessary repairs,” according to Con Ed.
Customers posted on social media that the power outage was not limited to the five boroughs. The momentary imbalance of electricity also affected the lower Hudson Valley, Long Island, and northern New Jersey.
Fortunately, no hospitals or critical care institutions in the city saw any interruptions, as per police reports.
However, a fire department official stated that the FDNY was responding to reports of power outages and blocked elevators at “various” sites around the city – including at Grand Central Terminal.
