A building collapsed in the Bronx on Monday afternoon, and officials say that an emergency response team is on the scene in the vicinity of 172 West Burnside Ave, Osborne Place and Phelan Place. The NYPD said that all available units are responding and to avoid the area.
The city Office of Emergency Management described the building as a six-story mixed use building with 52 residential units and six commercial units.
An FDNY spokesperson at the scene told Gothamist the corner of the building had collapsed. In a tweet, the FDNY said officials had no reports of injuries, but are using K-9 teams to search for any people.
Commissioner Laura Kavanagh (@FDNYFC) December 11, 2023 tweeted:
“In regards to the partial building collapse at 1915 Billingsley Terrace, the @FDNY is focused on life. We have no report of injuries at this time but our members, including our K-9 team, are looking for any people trapped. pic.twitter.com/USXndfRwlx
Workers in the area said the officials have closed the businesses in the area and told people to leave.
“We saw the smoke and the people running,” Sesoves Tabaraca, an employee of the nearby Bx Marketita, said in a phone interview. “When I opened the door, I saw that the building fell down.”
Tabaraca described seeing both big and small pieces of the building fall to the ground. He didn’t see anyone hit by the falling pieces, he added.
