Restaurant tycoon Danny Meyer wants to use technology to let customers to “get up and go” from one of his well-known restaurants rather than wait for the check.
The creator of Shake Shack and Union Square Hospitality Group, which also owns Gramercy Tavern and the upscale Union Square Cafe in Manhattan, is endorsing payment technology that resembles ride-sharing applications.
“We should be able to do that”, that is, enabling clients to make payments immediately without waiting for a server’s bill, and “leave whenever you feel like it,” Meyer disclosed at a recent IBM and Mansueto Ventures event on artificial intelligence, according to the New York Post.
Kelly MacPherson, the chief technology officer of the restaurant group, has been working on the initiative, and Meyer continued, “I think [USHG] is close to” disclosing the proprietary technology.
According to the Post, Meyer is also developing technology that allows the restaurant staff to get “your coat ready as you finish your meal.”
Industry analysts claim that during the epidemic, restaurants increased the use of technology, such as QR codes, to enable patrons to place orders and settle their bills, to discourage physical contact with employees. However, in the aftermath of the pandemic, more and more locals have seemingly returned to traditional menus and interactions.
