Prosecutors say a third suspect has been detained in connection with the death of a 1-year-old who overdosed from fentanyl exposure at a Bronx day care.
Senior law enforcement authorities informed media that the alleged drug dealer, Renny Paredes, collaborated with them and provided the supplies and substances to individuals involved in the trafficking at the Kingsbridge building. One accusation of conspiracy to sell drugs that caused death was brought against Paredes, 38.
The criminal complaint claims that Paredes, Grei Mendez, Carlisto Acevedo Brito, and others planned to distribute fentanyl at locations like the daycare, where they stored huge quantities of the drug.
Paredes might spend the rest of his life in jail if found guilty and would be sentenced to at least 20 years.
“I promised last week that we would continue to work to bring those involved in the child poisonings at Divino Niño daycare to justice. Since then, this Office and our law enforcement partners have worked around the clock to identify and apprehend additional individuals who are responsible,” said U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams. “Today’s arrest is one more step toward obtaining justice for the child-victims of this heinous offense and their families.”
Days prior to the arrest, a search warrant led police officers to find a drug-filled floor trap door within the daycare facility, under the floor where the youngsters were sleeping. Police released images of the fentanyl, other drugs, and paraphernalia discovered under it. Law enforcement also discovered packaging items for drugs, such as glassine envelopes for selling drugs that were red-stamped with the words “RED DAWN.”
