New York taxpayers will foot the $20 million monthly bill to house migrants on Randall’s Island, according to a state source. That translates to $10,000 per asylum-seeker if the site fills all of its 2,000 beds.
The makeshift facility is one of four sites fully paid for by the state as part of an effort to keep up with the flood of migrants that has pushed the city well beyond its limits.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced last week that the migrant crunch in the Big Apple is expected to cost an overall whopping $12 billion for the next three years, and is costing almost $10 million a day.
Around 100,000 men, women, and children seeking asylum have arrived in New York City since the spring of 2022. More than 57,000 are currently staying in 198 emergency shelters across the five boroughs.
The housing plan on Randall’s Island has been steeped in controversy due to it taking prominence on the soccer fields.
