Four civilians and one firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the debris caused by a crane catching fire when a crane collapsed into a neighboring building on Wednesday morning.
At least three were hospitalized.
The blaze happened at 550 Tenth Avenue between 40th and 41st streets in Hell’s Kitchen at around 7:30 AM. Video shows the crane on fire atop the building before a piece breaks off and collapses into a building across the street. The debris from the collision then descends and falls into the streets below as pedestrians take cover.
Officials said drivers should avoid the area between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues from West 41st to West 42nd streets due to the collapse.
“Please use alternate routes and expect traffic in the area,” the NYPD said.
