If you are looking for New York City’s most coveted neighborhood, you may have to leave Manhattan – though not too far.
RentHop, an apartment listing site, looked at searches made over the previous three months to determine which NYC areas have the highest demand among renters. It then produced “The 50 Hottest NYC Neighborhoods Right Now” to find out where New Yorkers are relocating to.
The most popular neighborhood for NYC renters in 2023 is Astoria, which topped the rankings this year after moving up 8 points. Many New Yorkers have turned to Queens for more inexpensive rates and value as rent costs around the city have soared. The East Village, which was the most searched location last year, fell to third place, just behind the Upper East Side .

The steady ascent of Northern Brooklyn is the most intriguing trend of this year’s list of the hottest neighborhoods. Currently, Bed-Stuy is the fourth most searched-for neighborhood among renters, followed by Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Greenpoint. Since last year, all four of these areas have seen significant increases in popularity, which has led to high rent costs and competitiveness.
Even if their popularity has decreased, Greenwich Village (-8 positions), the West Village (-7 spots), Chelsea (-6 spots), and the Bowery (-6 spots) continue to rank in the top 25 most populated areas.
So here’s the full top 10 of NYC trendiest areas (with the number of positions gained/lost compared to 2022):
