Looking for an original name to give your four-legged friend? Then better steer clear of one of these names.
According to a recent analysis of customer data by The Wag, a pet care, health and training company, the following are the most popular dog names in New York City:
Max
Bella
Luna
Charlie
Coco
Rocky
Milo
Lola
Bailey
Lucy
Max-mania is not just about the Big Apple, however. Each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia included Bella, Luna, Max, and Charlie in its rankings of the top four names nationally.
The Wag study is similar to that of TrustedHousesitters, a pet-sitting company, which discovered that the most popular dog names in 2023 in NYC are Lucy, Bella, Luna, Daisy, and Lilly for females and Charlie, Max, Cooper, Buddy, and Jack for males.
The popularity of pet names widely differed throughout New York City. According to the study, names in Manhattan are frequently derived from fictional movie characters, whereas pet names in Brooklyn are frequently derived from foods and beverages.
Furthermore, while owners frequently give their pets conventional human names in the Bronx and Staten Island, pet names “reflect the most culturally and linguistically diverse borough” in Queens.
