At least one of the boroughs is supportive of the indicted former President Trump.
Staten Island Republicans, via their official local party, issued a statement following Trump’s arraignment by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office on charges connected to falsified business records over a hush-money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. In it, they blasted Bragg and called the charges politically motivated.
“As felonies reached record levels under his watch, instead of doing his job and prosecuting criminals, DA Bragg chose to marshal the full resources of his office to pursue a seven-year-old case against the former president that even federal prosecutors declined to take up, which is based on allegations that, at worst, potentially amount to a campaign finance violation,” the party wrote in its statement. “It is no wonder that the people of this city and this country have lost faith in the institutions that are supposed to protect them and fairly enforce the rule of law. Bragg and the Democrats who have continued to support him should be ashamed of his gross prosecutorial misconduct and complete lack of accountability to the people of New York City. This is indeed a sad day for our great Democracy.”
Advance/SILive.com directly asked eight Republican elected officials on Staten Island—Rep. Nicole Mallitoakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn), Borough President Vito Fossella, State Sen. Andrew Lanza (R-South Shore), Assemblyman Michael Reilly (R-South Shore), Tannousis, Assemblyman Sam Pirrozzolo (R-Mid-Island), City Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore) and City Councilman David Carr (D-Mid-Island)—about the indictment and their support for Trump. Most did not offer direct answers but they all attacked Bragg and said they still back the 45th President.
Trump seemed to recognize this support when he mused online about what would happen if his trial was moved to Staten Island instead of being in Manhattan. We’ll never know, since the odds of that happening are essentially zero.
