The baton of leadership has been handed over at La Voce di New York, the first Italian-English digital newspaper in the U.S.
Stefano Vaccara, founder and editor of the newspaper since 2013, will be replaced by Giampaolo Pioli, a longtime New York correspondent for newspapers of the Quotidiano Nazionale group (Resto del Carlino, La Nazione and Il Giorno) and a respected figure for many Italian journalists in the United States.
Mr. Vaccara, who will be continuing to cover news from the United Nations and write as a columnist, recalled how “the idea for this newspaper was born from the great opportunity offered by the Internet: to be able to create a publication capable of being simultaneously local and global, readable both in New York and in Italy.”
The change between the two editors coincides with a moment of great renewal for La Voce di New York, which is growing in bilingual content as well as in users. “The winning formula,” explains newly-appointed Pioli, “lies in independent, complete and generalist information, created by a mix of very young and tech-savvy reporters and more seasoned ones, as well as prestigious names, here as in Italy. Our newspaper is not only an information tool capable of providing news of the City’s reality, of business between Italy and the U.S., of the United Nations and American current events, but a daily newspaper serving an increasingly large, young and articulate community.”
Among the growing ‘Voices’ are the American ones: the English section, led by Grace Russo Bullaro, is steadily gaining popularity, a sign that the American and Italian-American public is very interested in following news that is also Italian but written in English. Moreover, they also enjoy the travel section, in which Italy is presented to a polished readership.
Welcoming the changing of the guard at the newspaper’s editorship were Italian Ambassador to the United Nations Maurizio Massari, Consul General Fabrizio Di Michele, ICE Director Antonino Laspina and Director of the Italian Cultural Institute Fabio Finotti, as well as many prominent figures from New York business, finance and journalism.
