Today, April 25th, is La Voce di New York’s 9th birthday. We’re celebrating it by presenting a completely new version of our digital daily newspaper, with more news in real time, more New York coverage, more in-depth analyses of other cities in the US and in Italy, investigative reporting, exclusive coverage, and an always closer relationship with those who follow us or will follow us in the future.
For 77 years, Italy has celebrated the day that it was “liberated” from being occupied by Nazi-Fascists, and the end of the Second World War. But 8 weeks ago, a bloodbath broke out in the heart of Europe with the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.
President Putin has stomped on all the international laws that regulate the sovereignty of a population, its freedom, independence and regional stability.
We cannot remain “equidistant” between the aggressor and the attacked, especially if we believe in democracy. Russia was instrumental in combating Nazism. Today, however, Putin has become the brutal and unjustified aggressor who is spreading death, savagery and destruction in Ukraine and is causing a mass exodus of its population.
The president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, used very firm words when remembering Liberation Day, connecting the Italian resistance movement to that of Ukraine: “From ‘our’ April 25th, on the anniversary of the day that put an end to the hostilities in our region, I am calling for peace. For peace, and not to give up in the face of arrogance.”
The Ukrainian people are fighting and dying to preserve freedom and independence within its borders. They should be helped in any way possible.
At LaVocediNewYork.com, we try to explain the atrocities of this war, of the need for an immediate cease fire, and a negotiated solution, as requested by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, who will be at the Kremlin tomorrow.
We will continue to do so as an independent and free newspaper–which as it has done for 9 years, every day– offers accurate and authoritative information that brings verified facts and fights against fake news. Freedom of the press for us is any everyday commitment, at the service of our readers, of the community, of democracy.
In the following weeks, we will be relaunching our subscription campaign, offering our readers a space that will be more interactive, with a “Letters to the Editor-in-Chief” feature in Italian and in English.
