If you’re looking for a way to spice up your holiday decor, you might want to consider the new trend of a colorful Christmas tree. Instead of the traditional green, white or silver, these trees come in a variety of vibrant hues, such as pink, purple, blue, red and even rainbow. Some people love them for their fun and festive look, while others find them tacky and disrespectful.
But if the idea of a fake tree turns you off because of environmental concerns, or simply because you believe the best part of a Christmas tree is its heady scent of pine that brings the fresh and wintry fragrances of the outdoor right inside your living room, now you can have both: a tree that is both REAL and that comes in an array of colors. A Christmas tree farm in New Jersey is using a new technique to achieve this feat.
But how did Christmas trees in garish colors become popular in the past and what is their meaning?
According to some experts, colorful Christmas trees are not a new phenomenon. They date back to the 1950s and 1960s, when aluminum trees in different colors were popular. They were seen as a symbol of modernity and innovation, as well as a way to express one’s personality and style. However, they also faced criticism for being artificial and commercialized: both fake and vulgar.
The trend faded away in the 1970s and 1980s, but it resurfaced in the 2000s, thanks to the internet and social media. Nowadays, people can easily find and order colorful Christmas trees; there is something for everyone. Some celebrities and influencers have also pushed the trend, such as Kylie Jenner, who had a pink tree in 2017, and Beyoncé, who had a silver tree in 2018.
The meaning of colorful Christmas trees may vary depending on the person and the context. For some, they are a way to celebrate diversity and inclusivity, especially for the LGBTQ+ community. For others, they are a way to express their creativity and individuality, or to match their home decor and theme. And for others, they are simply a way to have fun and enjoy the holiday spirit.
At Wyckoff’s Tree Farm in Belvidere, New Jersey (less than a two-hour drive from NYC) they sell REAL trees in a rainbow of colors using a technique of latex-based colorants that are specifically created for painting Christmas trees. The farm has been selling these colorful trees for several years now, and their uniqueness is certainly a draw.
The pink, white, red, purple, light blue, dark blue, turquoise, black, and multi-colored trees are all sold on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last. Since they only make a limited amount of these colorful trees each year, if you’re looking to spice up your holidays this year with a nontraditional color, the clock is ticking to secure yours! Their first official opening day was Black Friday, November 25th.
The festive trees are typically sold for $16 per foot while the traditional green ones are $12 per foot (for trees 8′ and under). At Wyckoff’s you can also cut your own trees, so the outing can be a fun weekend activity, too! Cut your own trees are tagged with the price. More info on their website here.
